How to Interpret your Dreams

Dream interpretation has been around for thousands of years. It allows us to explore our subconscious mind and gives us the tools to solve some of our problems. If we take the time to really delve into what our dreams are telling us, we can access a wealth of inner knowledge and wisdom.

Most of us have at least 4-5 different dreams every night, so it’s no wonder that dreaming plays a big part in our lives. Apart from being just another state of reality, dreams act as our internal therapist, giving us signposts and warnings to things we overlook during our waking hours.

Getting Started

The first thing you will need is a dream diary or journal. Keep it next to your bed and record everything you remember the moment you wake up. It’s important to record everything, even if it doesn’t make sense, otherwise you could miss out on some important details. How many of us have remembered our dreams upon waking, only to forget them entirely an hour or so later.

Analysing Dreams

The subconscious mind communicates to us through symbols. That’s why it can often be difficult to interpret what your mind is trying to tell you. It will pluck out all sorts of strange and wonderful symbols in the hope that you will be able to make a connection. Remember, our dreams are our own so what makes sense to you, may not make any sense to someone else.

The first thing I would recommend at this point is to put your dream dictionary away. While there are some symbols that share the same general meaning, the most important thing about dream intrepretation is the context of the dream and how it made you feel. To make things even more difficult, some symbols have multiple meanings. For example, a snake can mean hidden fears and worries or it can represent healing and transformation. Ultimately, interpretation comes down to the context of the dream.

Because dreams are coming from your subconscious mind they are generally issues that have been suppressed. To successfully analyse your dreams, you will need to be completely honest with yourself and be prepared for critical self enquiry.

The following are some guidelines to work with when interpreting your dreams:

  • Ask yourself how the dream made you feel. Were you frightened? Happy? Nervous? For example, if you dreamt about flying (which represents freedom) but were terrified at the same time, chances are your subconscious is trying to tell you that you are nervous about moving forward. The emotional context of the dream is very important.

  • Use common sense and trust your intuition above all else.

  • Look for obvious signs and symbols such as colours, objects and numbers.

  • While people in your dream are important, they don’t necessarily represent what is happening in real life. For example, dreaming of kissing someone else’s boyfriend doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in love with him. Look for reasons why your subconscious may have chosen him as a symbol. This is where common sense and intuition are important.

  • There are no rules or definitive “right” or “wrong” answers. If an interpretation resonates with you, chances are it is right.

  • Don’t rely entirely on someone else’s interpretation. Your dreams are your own and no one else’s.

  • Before going to sleep at night, ask yourself a question to what you want answered. It is likely your dreams will give you the answer.

  • Look for recurring dreams. If you keep dreaming the same thing over and over again, it means that your subconscious is trying to alert you to something in your waking life that you are not wanting to face.

    Dream Symbols

  • When working with dream symbols, try not to take the dream too literal or allow logic to get in the way. Look for metaphors and what the dream symbolizes. Remember, some symbols have different meanings so it's important to consider the context of the dream. The following are some common dreams and what they generally symbolise:

    Flying – freedom
Falling – insecurity, lack of control
    Water – emotion
Stuck – lack of confidence, fear of moving ahead
Moving upwards – moving forward in life, pursuing goals
Moving downwards – suppressing thoughts into the subconcious
House – represents self. Different rooms in a house represent different aspects of self.

Finally, we all have the answers to our problems. Our dreams are a way in which we can access those hidden parts of ourselves and bring the answers to light. Learning to analyse your dreams can give you a wonderful opportunity for personal insight and spiritual growth.

Tarot Card of the Month - The Star

As the world begins to recover from the events of the last couple of years, I would like to introduce the Star card.  This card represents hope for the future after a period of upheaval and turmoil.

The Star card portrays a beautiful woman pouring water from an urn. This is the water of life that gives knowledge to all and the knowledge gives life in return. She is balanced, with one foot firmly on the earth and the other in the water. There are eight stars, all of which have eight points. Eight is the symbol of infinity and is also a power number. The central star is a symbol of Venus as the evening star, thus reinforcing this Tarot card’s meaning of love, peace and hope. The bird in the tree in the background is the sacred ibis of thought, roosting in the tree of mind.

When The Star appears in a spread, it indicates that a period of hardship has finally ended and the querant is now entering a time of rejuvenation. Frequently this card follows a period of illness or change and upheaval.

The Star card is the calm sea after the storm, as it represents tranquility, serenity and peace of mind. It can also indicate a happy ending with the promise of better days ahead. As the Star represents future possibilities, there is still a way to go before true healing has taken place. However, it gives us a glimpse that the future will be okay and with it, our hope for the future is restored.

Key words for the Star – hope, promise, healing, rejuvenation

    2021 - A Year of Change

I think most would agree that 2020 was a huge year on a global scale.  In numerology it was a Universal 4 year.  The four in numerology is a very practical number.  It’s all about hard work and setting up foundations for the future.  As the pandemic became prevalent worldwide, stable and practical systems were put into place.  As a four represents consolidation and stability, these foundations will see us well into the future.  The four energy is also known for being monotonous and routine, which many of us felt at some level during lockdown.

In 2021, we can expect something different as we enter a Universal 5 Year.  The five energy is all about freedom and independence.  It does not like to be restrained.  While the four seeks practicality and stability, the five wants to explore new territories.

So what does this mean for us?  The energy of the five is dynamic and restless so expect a year of change.  Surprises are in store as routine is broken.  With the urge to shake free from restrictions, many new initiatives will be put into place.  Some may work, some may not but it’s a time when risks need to be taken as exploration will bring opportunities.

The vibration of the five urges us to expand our boundaries, so expect changes in areas relating to travel, movement and exploration. Humanitarian issues will also be highlighted, with concern for the freedom and welfare of others.  Five is an eccentric number so expect the unusual.  It may seem like a year of organised chaos but this needs to happen in order for boundaries to be broken.

This will be a year of expansion so if any new projects are going to get off the ground, this is the year for it to happen. It is also a great year to take reasonable risks for any new projects.

Keep in mind that the Universal year applies to humanity as a whole.  In order to determine your full chart you need to consider your personal year number in conjunction with these influences.

    Keywords: change, freedom, exploration

    Herbal Lore - Lavender

Lavender would have to be one the most important and versatile plants to grow in a herb garden.  This magical plant is native to the Mediterranean and has many uses including culinary and herbal.  It is widely cultivated and thrives in most temperate climates.  You can recognise Lavender by its amazing scent and spectacular array of purple flowers.

I have Lavender growing throughout my garden and use it almost every day in some form.  Not only does it smell divine, it has many healing properties. It is one of my favourite plants and essential oil.

    History

Lavender has a long history dating back to the Egyptians.  The Romans used it in their bathwater and to wash their clothes.  In Tudor times, young women would sip lavender tea in the hope that they would be granted a dream in which they would see their true love.  Lavender tucked under the pillows of young men was thought to encourage them to ask for a lady’s hand in marriage.  Lavender has been associated with magic and sorcery as it was thought to ward off the evil eye.  As a natural insect repellent, it was popular in the middle ages as an anti plague herb as it repelled fleas.  Folklore suggests that used in combination with Rosemary, Lavender will preserve virtue.

    Herbal Lore

Lavender has strong antiseptic and antibacterial qualities.  It is also an antibiotic and antidepressant. Use it as a tonic to treat headaches, colds and flu.  Lavender makes an excellent sedative.  A few drops of essential oil sprinkled on your pillow at night will encourage sleep.  Added to an oil burner it will help with relaxation and stress.  It is an excellent aromatic and mixes well with other floral scents and is widely used in perfumes.  Add to bath mixtures and healing sachets.  Aids in detoxing and stimulating the immune system.  Apply essential oil to cuts and wounds to encourage healing.

    Culinary

Sweet and fragrant, Lavender can be used either as a savory or sweet herb.  Use in baking in biscuits and cakes and as a garnish.  It goes well with strawberries, blueberries, pears, lemon, orange, black pepper and chocolate.  For savoury dishes it complements Rosemary, Thyme and Sage.  It’s best to use culinary Lavender as some varieties are not suitable for cooking.  Use sparingly as it can be quite strong.

    Magical Uses

Dried lavender sticks or wands can be burnt like incense for space purification.  It is also used to clear the mind and to encourage or strengthen pure love.  Used for protection and healing.

How to Use a Ouiji Board

Ouiji boards (or séances) are ways in which we can make contact with the spirits of those who have passed over.  As a psychic medium, I've been interested in the spirit world for as long as I can remember, conducting my first séance at the age of eight.  I rarely use the ouiji board these days (as I connect with spirit directly) but séances are still an interesting way to communicate with those in spirit.

There's a few considerations that need to be taken into account before deciding to embark on this experience which I have outlined below. This article will only provide some information and tips on how to use a ouiji board.  If you decide you would like to give it a go then I suggest Google as the best resource for an in depth how to.

    Treat it with respect

First of all, spirit is very real.  Even if you don’t believe in it, it’s still real.  Any time you work with spirit you must have respect.  Do not indulge in alcohol during a séance.  Do not swear, be rude or disrespectful.   Cracking jokes and behaving badly could land you in trouble.

    Atmosphere

You can have a séance at any time of the day or night but try to create a dark room with some candles for ambience.  You don’t want too many distractions so turn off the TV, radio and telephone.  Charge the room with as much positive energy as possible.  Prayer is often a good way to do this.

    Work with a professional

Anyone can nominate themselves as a medium but personally, I would try to find someone that has had some experience simply because they know what they’re doing and can guide the session successfully.  That said, anyone can purchase a ouiji board and if you want to do it yourself, there’s no reason why you can’t.

You need at least two people to use a ouiji board with two fingers on the glass or planchette at all times.  Nominate someone as the medium so that person can ask the questions.  Keep it simple and ask questions that aim for yes or no answers.  I have never in my years of doing séances seen someone get possessed.  However, minor poltergeist activity can happen at any time.  Don’t ask spirit for physical signs or for them to show themselves in any way other than moving the glass.

    Expectations

Having a séance means you are opening the door to the spirit world in a somewhat uncontrolled way.  As in the physical world, there are different types of spirits.  If you contact an entity that is negative then politely ask them to leave.  Accept that the information you receive is not always truthful or accurate, even if you feel you are speaking to a loved one.  Spirits contacted during a séance tend to tell lies.  Sieve through the information you receive and only take on board what resonates with you.

    Closing the session

It’s important to always close the board.  When you are done with the session, thank spirit for their help and manually slide the glass or planchette to ‘Goodbye’.  I always rinsh the glass/planchette under running water at the end of the session.

Séances tend to get bad publicity, but done in the right way they can be an interesting experience, particularly if you want to connect with loved ones who have passed over.  If you do decide to give it a try, approach it with a light heart.  It's important to be sensible and respectful but at the same time, not take anything too seriously.

How to Stop Repeating Life Lessons

We’ve all been there.  You tell yourself, never again only to find yourself back in the same situation.  It could be with the same person or someone else entirely but with the same set of circumstances.  So how does this happen?  The short answer is, very easily.  In fact, most of us are unaware that there are lessons repeating in our lives constantly.

As humans, we are on an evolutionary journey and we need earthly experiences and life lessons in order for us to evolve.  Put simply, lessons will keep repeating until we either get it right or learn whatever it is we are meant to learn from that experience.  Once something has been learnt, it generally will not repeat.  It sounds simple right? The problem is most of us don't know what it is we're meant to be learning, which is why we find ourselves in these recurring patterns.

So how do we stop this from happening?  In order to stop an experience from repeating, we need to recognise why it is happening, what we are doing wrong and bring it to consciousness.  Listed below are a few suggestions:

    Be honest

The first step towards self realisation is to be completely honest with yourself.  Whilst our ego tells us that we are perfect and innocent, the reality is that we’re not.  We are human beings and as such we are flawed.  You need to be able to look at yourself in an honest way and accept your bad parts as well as the good parts.  A good exercise is to ask someone you trust to list all your negative traits.  Be prepared to feel uncomfortable!  The ego doesn't like being attacked and will put up obstacles to prove the other person wrong.

Accept full accountability for your actions

Blaming others and pointing the finger will only lead to further pain.  Until you accept full accountability for the part you played in the drama, the lesson will keep repeating.   It takes two to tango and if you find yourself in the same or similar situation, you need to accept that you have subconsciously put yourself there in order to learn something.

    Seeing the situation clearly

It goes without saying that regular meditation will give you insight and help you see everything more clearly.  If you find yourself repeating a life lesson, you need to start analysing why.  Ask yourself what drew you to that particular person or scenario in the first place?  What is it about that person/situation that you find detrimental? How does that impact on you personally?  For example, maybe you didn’t set clear boundaries or maybe you’re too forgiving?  Our weaknesses are not necessarily bad, sometimes they’re just personality traits that need to be worked on.

    Role Reversal

Often it’s difficult to see the situation clearly when you’re the one involved.  A good way to be more objective is to imagine you are giving advice to a friend about their situation, but with you being the friend.  What would you say to them?  What advice would give them?   Whatever the answer, chances are that’s the advice you need to give yourself.

    Seeing another point of view

Another way to gain objectivity is to imagine how the other person is feeling.  Having empathy is a great skill as it allows you to gain insight into another person’s point of view.  Understanding why someone may have reacted in a certain way will allow you to identify any negative behaviour patterns within yourself.

    Do something different

As the saying goes if you change nothing, nothing changes.  Try to identify patterns in your life and do something else.  For example, if you keep meeting the wrong type of person, try going out with someone you normally wouldn't go out with.  It may seem obvious, but the person you need to meet may be the complete opposite to what you think you need.  Keep an open mind and take some chances.  Stepping outside of the box and changing things up may be the solution.

    Getting the answer

Sometimes we don’t know the answer and we never will.  No matter how much work we do on ourselves and do the right thing you still may still find yourself questioning why something is repeating in your life.  That’s okay, because often it’s not about the lesson itself but how well we recover from that particular experience.  Judging yourself too harshly is essentially a waste of time and non productive.  Learning to pick yourself up and getting on with things could be what it is you need to learn.

    Be Kind to yourself

Finally, it’s important to be kind to yourself.  As I mentioned before, we are all human and therefore flawed.  It’s important to understand that sometimes we need to be in a situation for longer than we want to be in order to gain something from that experience.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  There's no time limit on learning.  Every soul is different and each of us are here on our own journey.

Self realisation takes effort.  Stepping outside of the ego is often difficult as admitting fault with ourselves can be uncomfortable.  By recognising and being aware of repeating life lessons it can release you from unnecessary pain and allow you to move forward in your life.

    2018 - A Year of Harmony and Co-operation

In 2017 we entered a new nine year cycle.  As a one year, 2017 represented new beginnings, a time when old concepts were challenged and new ideas were being implemented.  Initiatives were put into place and even though they seemed controversial, they challenged our collective thinking and allowed us to move forward.

As we enter into 2018, we move into a new phase of co-operation, balance and harmony as represented by the number two.  Of course, this is not without struggle as despite the numerology vibration of the harmonic two, we are still subject to the influences of the human condition.  That said, overall we can expect a year of general co-operation and balance.

This is an important year as it is a Master number 11/2 (2+0+1+8=11).  Master numbers carry a significant spiritual energy that is full of potential and possibility.  If we are collectively able to rise above the lower vibration of the two, then there is real potential for some greatness to take place in 2018.   The number two is all about intuition, so diplomacy and understanding will feature strongly.

A key function of the number two is co-operation and mediation, working in harmony with others.  There is an opportunity this year for more understanding with problems being resolved using tact and reason rather than sheer force.  The number two has a lot of potential for people to come together under the same umbrella to solve problems rather than achieve this singularly.  If there is any time where peace and resolution can be achieved, then 2018 is the year this would most likely happen.

Overall, the number two symbolises the union of peace.  It seeks to end separateness and unite all for the greater good.  This 11/2 energy will be available to us if we choose and it is up to us collectively to decide whether or not to use it constructively. Either way, 2018 carries a positive vibration.

Keep in mind that the universal year applies to humanity as a whole.  In order to determine your full chart you need to consider your personal year number in conjunction with these influences.

Tarot Card of the Month - Judgement

The Judgement card is ruled by Pluto, the planet associated with sexuality, physical and spiritual birth, death and resurrection.  The numerical value of this card is 20.

Based on the Christian Resurrection before the Last Judgement, an angel is depicted blowing a trumpet.  Beneath it, a group of humans are rising up from their graves with their arms outstretched.  They are greeting the angel in awe and reverence.

The Judgement card is about rebirth and resurrection.  It’s a calling for us to accept the past and let go in order to move on.  This is a time of significant change, when the querant has finally ‘seen the light’.  They are ready for change and to do things differently.  There is no way to change the past, it has already happened.  The only way forward is to accept and forgive mistakes and begin again.

This is a time of transformation, when we are ready to heed our highest calling.  We must be honest with ourselves and judge what best course of action needs to be taken in order to transform our lives.  We are ready to become who we truly are based on our past experiences.

With the lessons already learnt we must now decide how best to put future plans into action while being true to ourselves.  There are many different paths that can be taken and the Judgement card urges us to make decisions based on our own integrity.

How to Make a Smudge Stick

House cleansing is an ancient ritual that can help remove negativity and restore harmony to your home. It can also be used in any space or on objects that require cleansing (refer to my previous article How to Cleanse Your Home with Sage, 3 January 2013). Making your own smudge stick is easy and fun to do. Here is a video I made a while ago on how to make your own.

    Aromatherapy Revitaliser

    Essential Oil Air Freshner

Making your own air freshner is easy.  It’s also 100% natural, non toxic and great for the environment.  I use this room spray every day, particularly at night before going to bed as a room/linen spray.  It’s very healing and also makes a great gift idea.

    You will need:
    -  A small water spray bottle (125ml or similar)
    -  10-12 drops of essential oils of your choice
    -  Vodka (40% alcohol)
    -  Distilled water or pure bottled water

The basic recipe is for every half cup of water, you will need 3-4 tablespoons of Vodka (40% alcohol) and 10-12 drops of essential oil.

It’s important to use essential oils and not fragrant oils.  Fragrant oils are manufactured scents and are often toxic.  Good quality essential oils are usually available at your local chemist for a reasonable price.

Put all the ingredients into the spray bottle, give it a shake and you’re ready to go.  Spray in the air as a room deodoriser or use as a linen and bedroom spray.  It's also good for stress relief and eliminating pet odors.

Because of the alcohol content, the spray evaporates quickly and does not leave a damp residue. If spraying furnishings or fabrics, it's best to spray from a metre distance as this will distribute the scent and any dampness will evaporate within seconds.

    Disinfectant

You can also make a disinfectant cleaner by combining 4 tablespoons white vinegar, 3 cups water and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle.  You can use this cleaner anywhere around the home such as on benches, toilets and door knobs.  It’s safe to use on most surfaces and is completely non toxic.  See list of antibacterial essential oils below.

    Choosing Essential Oils

Essential oils have different properties and you can adjust according to your preference.  Here are some suggestions to get you started:

    Relaxation
Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Orange, Lime, Sandalwood, Rose, Jasmine, Bergamot

    Antibacterial/Antiviral
Lavender, Eucalyptus, Chamomile, Peppermint, Clove, Roman Chamomile, Lemongrass, Lime, Tea Tree

I usually create a blend of oils, particularly for the air freshner.  If you prefer, you can adjust the amount of oils you use depending on your preference.  There are no rules!  Be creative and discover what works for you.

I will also be releasing a range of Essential Oil Air Freshners through my Store.  These aromatherapy blends are made specifically to help with sleep, romance, immune support and general health and well being.  Follow the link for more information Psychic Spirit - Aromatherapy Range

    2017 - A Year of New Beginnings

In 2017, we enter a Universal 1 Year in numerology (2+0+1+7=1).  This marks the beginning of a new 9 year cycle.  While last year was all about endings, 2017 is all about new beginnings.

For a lot of us, 2016 was a tumultuous year.  Being a 9 year it represented endings, upheavals and changesA number of issues came to the fore in order for to healing to take place.  This was a karmic year and the shifts that occurred were necessary in order to clear out old energy to make way for the new.  Unfortunately, this was not without turmoil and many breathed a sigh of relief as 2016 ended.  This year, however, carries a completely different vibration.

The number 1 from a spiritual perspective is the number of creation, the primal force from which all other numbers spring forth.  It represents new beginnings, creativity, individuality and independence.  The number 1 is the initiator and leader.  It brings with it a pioneering spirit, full of determination and motivation.

In 2017 we can expect new ideas, concepts and innovations.  Because of the creative power behind the 1 energy, these ideas will manifest into reality and not simply be pipe dreams.  We need to adopt an open mind as some of these new ideas may seem eccentricHowever, this is typical of the 1 vibration and represents progress.  A lot of what happens now will determine the next 9 years.

As last year carried with it a sense of hopelessness, this year our sense of hope is renewed.  We can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and be prepared to embrace change rather than resist it.

On a humanitarian level, the global changes and upheavals that took place last year allowed us to develop a higher level of compassion and awareness and this will carry us forward into the next cycle.

Keep in mind that the universal year applies to humanity as a whole.  In order to determine your full chart you need to consider your personal year number in conjunction with these influences.

Tarot Card of the Month - Death

Ruled by Scorpio with its mystical number of 13, the Death card is one of the most feared in the Tarot deck.  Whenever this card is pulled, people literally tremble at the very sight of it.  This is a big card but there really is no need to be frightened.  For me, it's one of my favorites and I'll explain why.

Sitting on a white horse, we see Death represented by a skeleton wearing a suit of armour, indicating that he is invincible and unconquerable.  He holds a black and white flag with the symbol of a white rose representing purity.  On another level, the rose represents the transient nature of life - everything must eventually die.  At the foot of his horse, there is a child, woman and man.  Although the Bishop appears to be pleading for mercy, no one is exempt from death.  The sun in the background represents hope and new beginnings.  Despite our passing from this world to the next, the sun will continue to rise.  For me I also see this as a symbol of reincarnation but this is purely based on my own personal beliefs and can be interpreted in different ways.

The Death card literally means change, endings and transformation.  When this card is pulled, you can expect big changes happening in your life.  This can be anything from a house move, relationship endings, job changes etc.  It's a Major card which means that whatever the change,  it's going to be significant.

We are all creatures of habit and the very nature of change instills fear in all of us, yet it is a necessary part of life that allows us to move forward from one phase into another.  Despite our fear, change always brings new beginnings and opportunities.  As the saying goes, 'as one door closes, another opens'.  We are all spiritual beings having a physical experience (not the other way around) and we need to grow and learn while we are here on this earthly plane.  Therefore, the Death card should be welcomed and embraced, regardless of any temporary inconvenience it may bring.
